Mushroom habitat near Hanging Rock

Waterfall trails create cool, humid pockets where fungi can fruit on soil, leaf litter, and decaying wood. That setting is an important clue, but it does not identify the mushroom by itself. North Carolina’s diverse forests support many species that appear briefly after rain.

Replay the video and look for the cap surface, underside, stem base, and the material from which the fungus is growing. Nearby tree species, recent weather, and whether other mushrooms form a cluster can help a local identifier narrow the possibilities.

Stay on marked trails and follow park rules when documenting fungi. Do not eat a wild mushroom or remove it from a protected area based on a visual guess. Press play to inspect this Hanging Rock discovery, then compare the recorded traits with a regional guide or North Carolina mycology resource.

New Mexico Viewers

Explore New Mexico nature in close-up

New Mexico brings together Chihuahuan Desert, Rio Grande bosque, volcanic mesas, grasslands, canyon country, and the Sangre de Cristo and other high ranges. Elevation, monsoon moisture, and access to rivers or springs explain much of the state’s biological variety.

From Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Las Cruces, and communities statewide, viewers can use this guide to compare local habitats, seasons, and field marks with original WhatsTheZoom videos. A useful identification starts with where and when an observation was made—not simply what color it appeared on camera.

Habitats and wildlife clues to watch

  • Watch desert plants, insects, and reptiles during cool hours.
  • Use the Rio Grande bosque to compare riparian life with surrounding drylands.
  • Look for mountain flowers and fungi after seasonal moisture.
  • Treat springs, seeps, and isolated wetlands as sensitive observation sites.

When to look closely in New Mexico

Spring flowering depends strongly on winter moisture. Summer monsoon rain can trigger insects, amphibian activity, and fungi, while also creating flash-flood risk. Autumn is often excellent in the mountains; winter observation shifts toward lower elevations, tracks, bark, and geology.

For a stronger identification, record the date, broad location, habitat, approximate size, behavior, and several viewing angles. Avoid handling unknown fungi, plants, insects, or wildlife, and follow current local access and safety guidance.
